Successful implementation of machine-readable Ukrainian travel passports with the polycarbonate data page
The state project was launched in June 2007 after the adoption of corresponding regulatory acts.
The passport has 25 degrees of protection, which outnumbers the degrees of protection of Ukrainian paper currency. The passport design was developed with the application of traditional ornamental motives and the heraldry of Ukraine and its regions.
The personalization of passports is performed by the State Center for Document Personalization with the application of technologies of laser engraving and perforation. These technologies provide thorough protection of documents against forgery as the submitted information cannot be altered without damaging the blank itself.
The new Ukrainian passport was recognized by the UN and the OSCE as one of the best of its type in the world.
The letter of ICAO addressed to the Ukrainian Government says:
“We have tested the submitted sample of the passport and reviewed it for compliance with Document 9301, Part 1 “Machine-readable passports” (Edition 5, 2003). The passport sample meets the ICAO requirements.
We compliment the Government of Ukraine on the accomplishment of this significant step aimed at perfecting the protection and structural integrity of Ukrainian passports, and for facilitating international travel for Ukrainian citizens”.
